In the Pacific Ridge residential development, installing a new sewer pipeline posed a significant engineering challenge. The required trench excavation extended below the groundwater table, meaning natural groundwater would seep in as soon as digging began. This risked flooding the trench, causing unstable soil conditions and potential safety hazards for the construction crew. Traditional excavation without mitigation wasn’t feasible under these saturated ground conditions, so a robust groundwater control strategy was crucial to keep the project on track.

RAM GeoServices met this challenge by implementing a vacuum wellpoint groundwater control plan (GWCP) – a specialized construction dewatering system designed to lower the water table around the excavation. The GWCP involved installing a series of small-diameter wells (wellpoints) around the trench, all connected to a high-efficiency vacuum pump and manifold system. This setup actively drew groundwater out of the soil before it could enter the trench, creating a temporary drop in the local water table. In slightly technical terms, the vacuum wellpoint system created suction that pulled water away from the dig site, keeping the excavation dry and the soil stable throughout the pipeline installation.

Thanks to this proactive groundwater control solution, the sewer pipeline trench remained stable, dry, and safe from start to finish. Construction crews were able to work efficiently at the bottom of the excavation without interruptions from water ingress or mud. The dry conditions prevented trench wall collapses and schedule delays, allowing the pipeline installation to proceed smoothly and on time.
